Artist Statement

In this body of work named, Down the Rabbit Hole, I explore the theme and nature of Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. I also implemented the aspects of the Victorian Era and that of the Nouveau riche lifestyles that suggests gaudiness and the implemented consumerism that is associated amongst the nouveau riche lifestyle and what is seen today in media for example, the excessive partying, booze, and the upkeep through constant need for a set amount of income. I also point out these extremities by showing the Alice type figures who show some sort of childlike persona who is brought into the nouveau riche lifestyle and because she cannot understand it is put into a dissociative state where at first by looking at everything and then as time goes by she is then associated with the objects within the scene. The other scenes with the mad hatter and the “old” money type figures represents the appealing lifestyle of the nouveau riche but also represents the distain that “old” money has for the nouveau riche lifestyle.

Through this I also implemented the idea of the seven deadly sins: greed, sloth, wrath, gluttony, envy, pride, lust. I chose to focus on two of the deadly sins which are greed and gluttony while subtly using envy and pride as an afterthought when looking at the pieces. I cross-referenced greed with envy as both the “old” money and nouveau lifestyles show greed for money, power, and influence. The other deadly sin that I also reference is gluttony which also ties into greed and envy, it also shows the pride that the “old” money has for staying within their lifestyle, the mad hatter offers them into going Down the Rabbit Hole.
